"Current clinical practice and future development in surface-guided radiation therapy"

Abstract:
Surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) is a form of radiation therapy (RT) that employs optical cameras mounted in the treatment room to form a 3D model of a patient’s body surface relative to the treatment isocentre, guide initial patient setup and monitor for intrafraction motion. Key advantages of surface imaging include the ability to monitor the patient in real-time without ionizing radiation, as well as having the widest field of view of any imaging system currently employed in RT. SGRT has mainly been used for stereotactic
radiosurgery (SRS) and deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) applications, but the past 15 years has seen the technology be developed into a widely used tool with application to many disease sites, enabling broad quality and safety improvements for all patients and contributing to a more efficient clinic. This lecture will provide a historical overview of SGRT, survey current clinical practice and present recent innovations in SGRT hardware and software as well as potential future applications. Finally, this lecture will discuss some open questions and major themes in SGRT research.

Biographical summary:
Dr. Jeremy Hoisak is a medical physicist and associate professor in the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences at the University of California San Diego. Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Dr. Hoisak studied Engineering Physics at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario, before undertaking graduate studies at the University of Toronto in the Department of Medical Biophysics where he received his PhD in 2011. He then completed a therapy medical physics residency at the University of California San Diego before joining the faculty there in 2015. Dr. Hoisak’s clinical and research interests include automation for quality and safety in clinical workflows, incident learning systems, electronic brachytherapy, and surface guided radiation therapy. Dr. Hoisak is the lead editor of the textbook “Surface
Guided Radiation Therapy”, published by CRC Press in 2020.
