merlin & arthur | turn back time (magic reveal au)

PLOT: Arthur confronts Merlin after witnessing him doing magic during one of their expeditions. The betrayal cuts deep; he's not sure if Merlin's magical powers hurt him more than the not ever really knowing who his best friend truly was.

Arthur gives Merlin a chance to redeem magic in his eyes: save his father from his imminent death. Merlin fails to do so, and in grief, Arthur banishes the use of magic in Camelot. He struggles to forgive Merlin's dishonesty and come to terms with magic as an ally to Albion.

When Merlin informs Arthur about Mordred's future betrayal, Arthur doesn't believe him and forbids Merlin from returning to Camelot. Merlin still helps Arthur from a distance, accepting the fate that Arthur truly doesn't want him in his life.

Arthur comes to terms about how much he mises Merlin, and sets out to find him after he seems to have disappeared. They resolve their differences, and Arthur takes Merlin by his side as the court sorcerer.

Arthur dies at the hands of Mordred after years of a peaceful reign. Merlin waits by the Lake of Avalon for him, wondering if things would have been different if he had been the one to tell Arthur he had magic.
