Elegy for a friend by Sérgio Assad, performed by Edson Lopes

"Robert Bird was a leading scholar of Russian literature
and film at the University of Chicago.

I met Robert at a party and discovered his passion
for classical guitar.
He surprised me by how well
he knew some of our Assad duo recordings.
We spent time together in Paris
where he and my wife were teaching.
Our friendship was abruptly interrupted by
his premature passing in September 2020.

Robert's wife, Christina Kiaer,
told us the bad news and said that his last wish
was for me to play Villa Lobos during his funeral.
That day I was unable to do anything
other than write something in his honor.
I wrote this Elegy and played it
after playing the Villa Lobos' Prelude 3 during his ceremony.

This song reflects for me the premature loss of a dear friend."
