다시 나온 난징 시내. 우리나라와 마찬가지로 일본의 침략을 받았던 중국의 국민들은 이 역사를 어떻게 생각하고 있는지 궁금했다. 택시기사에게 슬쩍 역사 이야기를 꺼내본다. “내 나이대 난징 사람들은 일본을 많이 싫어할 수밖에 없어요. 외지에서 온 사람들은 일본에 대해 큰 원한이 없을 거예요. 하지만 우리는 난징 현지인이기 때문에 당시 사건에 대한 기억이 깊이 새겨져 있어요” “제 아버지가 1941년에 태어나셨어요. 그때는 할아버지가 살아계셨는데요. 할아버지 말씀으로는 사건 당시 강이 온통 붉은색이었대요. 생각해보세요. 난징 사람들이 일본을 미워하지 않는다고 말할 수 있겠어요?” 난징에는 일본에 대한 크나큰 원한의 기억이 남아있다. 택시는 난징대학살기념관에서 멈췄다. 한국을 식민지로 삼은 뒤 중국과 침략전쟁을 벌였던 일본은 난징에 도착해 대학살을 자행한다. 군인은 물론 아이와 노인까지 무차별적인 살육이 약 6주간에 걸쳐 지속됐다. 이로 인한 피해자는 30만 명에 달했다고 한다. 아시아의 홀로코스트로 불리는 이 사건은 난징 시민들의 마음 깊숙한 곳에 큰 상처로 자리하고 있다. 기념관 내부로 들어가자 한 곳을 둘러싸고 사람들이 모여 있다. 다들 무엇을 보고 있는 걸까. 바로 희생자들의 유골이다. 이 기념관은 학살 희생자들의 시체가 무더기로 발견된 무덤, 일명 만인갱의 터 위에 지어졌다. 실제 유골들이 그대로 전시된 이곳을 걷는 것만으로 당시 학살이 얼마나 끔찍한 것이었는지 느낄 수 있다. 전시관 곳곳에서 마주하는 희생자들의 얼굴 벽 한쪽을 빼곡하게 메운 희생자들의 이름은 이 기념관이 무엇을 기억하고자 하는 것인지 선명하게 전해준다. “이 기념관을 방문하려고 일부러 난징에 왔어요. 제 어머니의 남동생도 그때 불타 죽었거든요. 그 생각만 하면 말도 못 하게 괴로워요. 오늘 희생당한 동포들 얼굴과 마주하는데 정말... 너무 끔찍하고 잔인한 일이에요” 일본군의 난징 침공은 임시정부 요인들에게도 직접적 위협이 됐다. “한번은 적기 야습이 있어서 위험함에도 불구하고 침대에서 일어나 문 밖으로 나섰다” “돌연 벽력이 진동하는 듯한 소리와 함께 내 침실의 천장이 무너져 내가 누웠던 침대를 덮었다” “각처에서 불빛이 하늘로 높이 치솟아 하늘색은 마치 붉은 담요와 같았다“ “중요한 건 일본이 잘못을 인정하지 않았어요. 그렇죠? 두 명이 싸웠는데 한 명이 잘못했다고 인정하면 용서해줄 수가 있겠죠. 그런데 잘못을 인정하지 않았어요” 기념관을 나오는 길엔 평화를 상징하는 동상이 우뚝 서있다. 아픈 역사를 결코 잊지 않겠다는 의지가 새겨져있는 난징대학살 기념관. 역사를 기억하는 것이 평화를 지키는 일임을 기념관은 말하고 있다.
