🌆 Why does sundowning happen in dementia — and what can you do to help?
If you care for someone with dementia, you may have noticed that late afternoon or early evening can sometimes bring restlessness, agitation, pacing, or confusion. This is known as sundowning, and it can be one of the most challenging times of the day for caregivers and families.
I’m Dr O’Donovan — a medical doctor in the UK working in dementia care services. I’ve also cared for both of my own grandmothers who had Alzheimer’s disease, so I understand how tough these moments can be — both emotionally and practically.
In this video, I’ll walk you through:
Why sundowning happens (including changes in the brain’s internal clock)
How it might look and feel for the person living with dementia
Practical, evidence-based tips to help reduce agitation and bring calm to evenings
Strategies for looking after yourself as a caregiver during these difficult times
These are realistic, compassionate approaches — from creating a calming routine and adjusting lighting, to using music, gentle activity, and reassurance.
