Team VMET: Helping Veterans in Crisis

VMET bridges VA support and local first responders for Veterans in need.

Many Veterans face unique physical and mental challenges related to their service, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety. In times of crisis, it is crucial they receive specialized care tailored to their needs.

The Veteran Mobile Engagement Team (VMET)* pairs VA Police Officers and VA Social Workers to respond directly to Veterans experiencing mental health crises or in need of services. Through cooperation with local law enforcement, fire, and EMS, VMET aims to connect Veterans with VA resources, especially those not recently engaged in VA care.

VMET is a team within the VA Police Department, better known as VAPD. At VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, VAPD works across five counties, 11 sites of care, and through numerous specialized teams to ensure the safety and security of Veteran patients, staff, and visitors.

VMET helps de-escalate potentially volatile situations while ensuring Veterans are quickly connected to appropriate care and ongoing support. The program also serves as an essential resource for local law enforcement, fire and EMS, crisis units, shelters, and outreach teams. By providing education and direct support, VMET helps create a network of care that can respond swiftly and effectively whenever Veterans need it most.

Social workers play a key role in identifying needs, linking Veterans to essential services, and supporting recovery and stability. Many VMET team members are Veterans themselves, bringing understanding and dedication to every interaction.

This collaborative approach makes a significant difference in the lives of Veterans, promoting recovery and reintegration into their communities.
