Alice: Madness Returns, released in 2011, is an action game with platforming and puzzle-solving elements and is a sequel to 2000's American McGee's Alice. Madness Returns takes place 1 year after the events of the first game, with Alice now living at the Houndsditch Home for Wayward Youth under the care of psychiatrist Dr. Angus Bumby, who is attempting to use hypnosis to help Alice forget her traumatic past so she can move on with her life. After returning to Wonderland for the first time since her experience in Rutledge Asylum, Alice finds it being corrupted by a new evil called Ruin. As she attempts to discover what Ruin is and why it is corrupting Wonderland, in the real world, she also searches for the truth of what started the fire that destroyed her home and killed her family.
