The Black Sea city of Sukhumi was once a smart sunny resort town,
before Abkhazian separatists fought a successful war for
independence from the former Soviet republic of Georgia between
1992 and 1993. Now Sukhumi is in ruins, the poor capital of a self-proclaimed independent republic that is becoming increasingly isolated from the rest of the world. Conditions in the city and in all of Abkhazia are getting worse; Russia is tightening a
Georgian-imposed economic blockade, exacerbating the situation in
the tense Georgia-Abkhazia-Russia triangle.
