PORT NECHES - In Port Neches, families came together for a vigil at a city park to support keeping a cross in the park that has been there for 45 years.
Families gathered around the cross today for a prayer vigil at Riverfront Park.
Earlier this week, the Freedom from Religion Foundation sent a letter to the city's mayor asking for the cross's removal from the park.
The letter states it's unconstitutional to have a cross on public land.
Mayor Glenn Johnson says he's received a call from many people angry with the group.
They have previously sent letters to Kountze and Hardin Jefferson ISD's on varying matters about the place of religion in schools.
A letter signed by "your friendly Port Neches atheists, agnostics and other non-Christians" was left at the cross along with cookies, asking to find an amicable solution.
Members of Midcounty's Atheist and Agnostic Group say they found the letter torn up.
