Urinary hesitancy is a situation where the patient goes to the toilet but he or she cannot start urinating immediately which means to say he has to wait for a few seconds or a half a minute or so before the first drops of urine start coming out. This is called urinary hesitancy. So the patient says I go to the toilet I unzip my pant but I cannot pass urine for many seconds and only after that my urine stream starts. What are the causes of urinary hesitancy? The most common cause is enlargement of the prostate. Enlargement of the prostate occurs in elderly men usually after the age of 55 to 60 years and this causes obstruction to the flow of urine. Here typically the patient tries to start passing urine in the toilet but has to wait sometimes as much as a minute before he can initiate voiding. So if you have got this problem along with other obstructive symptoms like prolonged voiding time or prolonged urination time or the urine flow is not good or sometimes the urine flow starts but it stops and again you have to start again. All these things if you have these problems then you should go to urologist who will evaluate and treat you accordingly.
