Episode: German South West Africa.
Hello, I'm Dr. Philip, and welcome to Lost History Files, a channel dedicated to shining a light on forgotten, neglected, and lesser-known episodes in history. In this episode, we turn the spotlight on German South West Africa (1884-1915), the German colony in the deserts of southern Africa.
We consider the pre-colonial Rhenish missionary influence in the area, the German trading settlements which followed, German imperial designs, the Herero and Nama uprisings, and how Germany lost the colony during the First World War. We end by reflecting on the enduring - if complex - German legacy in what is now modern-day Namibia.
