There is no quick-and-easy way to upgrade the pickups on a 335 / 339 style guitar. You have to pull all of the guitars innards out through the F holes to do the job before cramming them all back inside again when you're done - at the same time as ensuring that you can pull the pots up and through their respective holes in the guitar top. You think you might be able to just pull out the volume pots to swap out the pickups? Nope. You can't get those out without dragging the tones with you. Think you can get away just undoing all the pots? Nope, you have to drag the jack socket with them. And THAT one you'll REALLY struggle to keep a hold of once it disappears into the guitar's dark spaces.
You get the picture. It's a b*ll-buster of a job - but a compelling challenge nonetheless!
You'll see from the video that it also LOOKS insanely messy - so knowing what everything is and where it came from is crucial. I make no apologies for my weird 'shrink tubing' pot-holding technology or sticking everything to the guitar top so I know what's what! :-)
Apart from the pickup upgrade challenge, the set up on this guitar was pretty straightforward: new Tusq adjustable nut, precision fret levelling and a nice low, light playing action set at both ends with a fairly flat neck relief in between.
The adjustable Tusq nut on this guitar was a bit unusual; being a left-hander there's no Tusq insert of the kind I wouldn normally use on 3-aside guitars (Tusq simply never made one) so I improvise with my backup method. This is to use a cut back Tusq left-handed nut top, a 3D printed foot and a 3D printed base. Together those make a custom adjustable 3-aside left-handed nut :-)
