Entering another chapter of travel on the America's Great Loop. The Great Loop is getting exciting entering the Elizabeth River with the Coast Guard and Navy Base ahead. Leaving the Intracoastal Waterway ICW for Hampton Roads and heading for Yorktown. Diverted to Naval Station Norfolk Sailing Center due to a Torando Watch. Watch the winds arriving at the USS Harry S. Truman, aircraft carrier. The next day the weather was wonderful to see a Navy Submarine heading into Port and the USS Truman leaving Norfolk.
Subs are a challenge to see on the water though they were being escorted by two Navy Patrol Boats and constant radio call for a security zone.
As a 20 year old I passed within 200 feet of submarine in the late 80's in the Hampton Roads Channel by Thimble Shoals. Must have given the crew a heart attack. I just didn't know how ginormous subs were underwater.
Marina: MWR Norfolk Naval Sailing Center and Marina.
The Great Loop is a 6,000-mile adventure that takes boaters around the eastern part of the U.S. & Canada. Loopers cruise aboard their own boats, often taking about a year, to complete the route. Learn about the Great Loop at www.greatloop.org
