Nifty paused after a sharp two-day rally, trading in a narrow range on the weekly expiry day and closing marginally higher at 26,177. Early gains faded amid mild selling pressure towards the close, keeping the index below the 26,200 mark. Sectoral performance was mixed, with media, metal and FMCG stocks leading the gains, while IT, PSU banks and pharma stocks underperformed. Broader markets mirrored the benchmark, with midcaps ending flat and smallcaps edging higher, while the rupee closed flat for the second session as year-end rebalancing flows offset weakness. This morning, global cues were mixed. US markets extended gains to the fourth straight day while Asian markets started on a mixed note, with several markets to close early on account of Christmas eve. Volumes are expected to remain thin on account of year-end holiday.
