My '59 Schwinn Racer that I found locally some years back. The bike needed a wash and a tune-up. There are scratches, nicks, dents, some minimal rust. It's not perfect at all. With that, it needed very little maintenance when I got it. I replaced the brake cables, new KMC chain, new 23t SA cog, rebuilt the Steyr 3 speed IGH, cleaned and re-packed all the bearings. There was very little wear on the BB cage and bearings, the same on the IGH when I disassembled it. The brake pads and tires have very good rubber and those did not need any attention. The tires are original BF Goodrich Silvertown 26 x 1 3/8.
This was the only Racer year that the bike did not come with a Sturmey Archer hub, although the design and build are near identical to the SA AW 3 speed hubs. I rarely ride this bike, as it's a tad too small for me. That and I don't want to put anymore wear on the saddle or tires. I took the bike down from the wall to give it a quick wipe down and do my yearly inspection, so to speak.
