It all started while I was driving along one of the cleanest, newly completed roads in a rural area of Rwanda, East Africa. Rwanda, one of the few African countries that has heavily invested in infrastructure development, takes pride in its immaculate and modern roadways.
In front of me was a man driving a lightweight goods vehicle. The road conditions were perfect—smooth and well-paved—but it had a series of sharp corners. And when I say sharp, I mean dangerously sharp corners. One wrong move could be enough to flip a vehicle over.
The driver ahead was carelessly speeding, poorly negotiating those perilous turns. I watched in alarm as he approached yet another sharp corner, failing to slow down.
Suddenly, he lost control. He hit the brakes, but it was too late. The vehicle flipped and turned upside down.
Thankfully, by the grace of God, his life was spared. However, the vehicle and its cargo were severely damaged.
After witnessing this incident, I made a vow to change my driving behaviour. It was a stark reminder that reckless driving, especially on challenging roads, can have devastating consequences.
