After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Polish defense expenditure went into overdrive, reaching 5 percent of the country’s GDP. The Polish army has already bought a lot of stuff with this cash: tanks, howitzers, artillery systems, armored personnel carriers, satellites, and even aerostats. The country is also in the midst of a significant expansion of its air defenses and is thinking about submarines. We talk with brig. gen. Michał Marciniak, deputy head of the Polish Armament Agency, the military procurement body within the country’s Ministry of Defense, about the equipment, how much of it can be produced locally, and how European policy (like joint procurement) influences the way Polish armed forces arm themselves.
