What is Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH)?

An overview of Langerhans cell histiocytosis, or LCH. LCH is a rare lung disease caused by the accumulation of a type of cells in the lungs, around the small airways. These cells are called Langerhans cells.
This condition leads to the appearance of so called "lung cysts", which are small cavities within both lungs. Typically, in LCH, there are multiple small cavities in both lungs, but which are often not present at the very bottom part of the lungs. However the appearances may vary depending on the stage of the disease.
Typically a firm diagnosis requires a lung biopsy (taking a small sample of tissue). However, lung biopsy risks sometimes do not outweigh the risks, especially if it does not change the management of the case.
LCH is often associated with smoking, and quitting smoking tends to stabilize the condition. In some situations, other treatments may be required, such as chemotherapy to get rid of some of the Langerhans cells. Your doctor can advise which would be the optimal management in your case.
