Greetings viewers, and Happy ANZAC Day 2023 !!
West of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, there is a quiet country road, Daisy Rd, Mt Tarampa, which holds on to World War 2 secrets and postwar motor racing glories, opening them up only to those who explore a little more deeply. I first went there in 1987, and here you can join me on my November 2020 visit.
Some of the locals did not understand why there was crude bitumen all over their front yards, and I had to explain to them that they were living squarely atop a World War 2 bomber airstrip which launched bombers at the Japanese submarines, and from which a man flew to his eventual beheading by the enemy. Furthermore, they knew not that they were living on an authentic Grand Prix track - Lowood International Raceway - which bore witness to many a great race, including the 1960 Australian Grand Prix that many aficionados of the sport reckoned as great a race as any ever held Down Under....
But it's not just the 2km main straight (now Daisy Rd); use that road as your anchor point (or better yet, THIS VIDEO) and you can soon zero in on the entire racing circuit / airfield installations all around....
The area is positively crackling with past glories, reserved for the more ambitious urban explorer, and I hope I can persuade you to get into it yourself!!!!
