Jesus Had No Problem With Slavery? - Professor Bart D Ehrman

Slavery is one of the most uncomfortable topics in biblical history, yet it was a defining institution of the ancient world. In this MythVision episode, we dive deep into the historical reality of slavery in the first century, dismantling the modern myth that biblical slavery was merely “indentured servitude.”

Drawing on critical scholarship, we explore how slavery functioned in the Roman Empire, why Jesus and Paul never opposed the institution, and how New Testament language openly reflects ownership, punishment, and human property. We also examine how passages like Matthew 5 were later interpreted and whether they played a role in justifying the transatlantic slave trade, alongside more commonly used biblical arguments like the Curse of Ham.
