This live-hosted music and dance presentation, featuring musicians and dancers from the Samahan Filipino American Performing Arts & Education Center and ethnomusicologist Dr. Bernard Ellorin explores the rich cultural context of the performing arts of the Maguindanao people. Kim Kalanduyan-Villanueva, granddaughter of the great kulintang master and NEA National Heritage Fellow Danongan “Danny” Kalanduyan, and Nicholas Delmundo-Benton, field researcher of cultural dances from the Muslim societies of the Southern Philippines and Eastern Sabah, Malaysia discuss the significance and purpose of select music and dance pieces. They also address how the continuation of these art forms in the United States plays an important role in the preservation of the traditional performing arts in the Philippines and for the Filippino diaspora.
Kim Kalanduyan-Villanueva, Nicholas Delmundo-Benton, and Dr. Bernard Ellorin addressed questions from the audience throughout the program.
