Quite possibly the most impactful performance among an entire evening's performances of wonderful songs by exceptional artists.Quite possibly Ron Hynes' most powerful song - an angry, sorrowful song about the death of a friend by suicide - and a song I saw Ron perform a number of times, always with that raw edge of blistering emotion, nothing sweet or wistful or soothing to be found here, only pain and rage and loss. When Ron got to his "Goddamn, Goddamn", everyone in the venue believed him. I used to listen to him sing this agonised song of his and wonder who would be singing it about him after he was gone. The answer to that, at least on this Night Of A Thousand Songs at the tribute show to NL's own self-tormented Songwriter Laureate, is Damhnait Doyle (backed up by the All-Star Band, most of whom played many gigs across many miles and many years with Ron). I believed her "Goddamn" too. She broke our hearts just as Ron had, and could he have heard her, his would surely have shattered too. St. John's NL, December 29, 2024 (All-Star Band comprised of Paul Kinsman, Barry Canning, Cory Tetford, Paul "Boomer" Stamp, Sandy Morris, Chris LeDrew, Billy Sutton)
