wildfire sadness | West Kelowna | British Columbia

On todays video I want to create something that may convey my sadness seeing the destructive wildfire in the west kelowna area but most importantly, expressing my gratitude to our emergency response personnel, including those that came from other cities, provinces and countries such as Australia, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil to name a few. I also want to talk about wildfire trends, causes and what can be done to mitigate them. 2023 west kelowna wild fire also known as the McDougal wild fire was called by the fire chief, as the one in a hundred years fire due to its size, intensity and complexity.
The McDougall Creek Wildfire was the largest wildfire in the history of West Kelowna. If this doesn’t covey the sadness about the west Kelowna wildfire I dont know what will.
Over 10,000 residents were evacuated and more than 500 firefighters were battling the blaze from the ground and air.
2023 is now officially the most expensive, most destructive wildfire season on record in British Columbia.
The B.C. Wildfire Service says almost 25,000 square kilometres of trees, bush and grassland have burned this year, (which is about 9,700 square miles) almost double 2018's previous record, while the cost of fighting fires is now at approximately $770 million. 60% of the Wildfires In Canada are cause natural causes but 40% are related to human caused fires.
Finally, my heart goes to the families affected and my gratitude to emergency responders such as firefighters, RCMP, traffic controllers, bc wildfire services, health care workers, volunteers, local businesses that came forward to support evacuees and those in our community that found creative ways to help those in need.
