G20 press conference update by Minister Ronald Lamola
Minister Ronald Lamola briefed the media on South Africa’s state of readiness to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit at Nasrec, confirming that logistical, security and diplomatic preparations are on track and that the venue is fully prepared to receive heads of state and delegations. He framed the summit as a historic moment for Africa, highlighting the African Union’s full participation and South Africa’s presidency priorities of solidarity, equality and sustainability. Lamola addressed concerns over the non-attendance of some leaders, stressing that the absence of a handful of participants will not derail the summit’s substantive agenda and that technical and policy discussions will proceed. He also emphasised South Africa’s openness to continued engagement — including with the United States should it choose to attend — and reiterated the government’s optimism that a consensus declaration can be adopted to advance global economic cooperation and African interests.
