MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries is a standalone and final expansion pack for MechWarrior 2, released in 1996 for DOS and Windows. I'm playing the DOS version as usual. It is a "prequel sequel" in which the player assumes the role of a mercenary commander who fights for various Inner Sphere factions up to the moment of initial Clan invasion.
To me, the main selling point of this expansion was the management aspect of the game. Instead of having all technologies unlocked in the beginning, the player must manage the mercenary company's finances and work their way up from rags to riches to survive the deadly universe. The management game has been a recurrent staple in most BattleTech universe games ever since. Unfortunately, the salvage system is totally botched in the DOS version thus no incentive to actually preserve enemy mechs. The ridiculously poor hit detection wouldn't make your life easy anyway. Despite having to fight the game more than the enemies, this is a great addition to the MechWarrior franchise.
