Ramzan Kadyrov leads Russia's republic of Chechnya. He is sometimes called a warlord, sometimes Putin's soldier. He took the reins from his father in Chechnya: Akhmad Kadyrov, who switched sides during the Second Chechen War, offering his services to Russia. After he was assassinated, his son Ramzan took over.
His ambitions have seen him attempt to treat Chechnya as his personal property and make claims to represent all the Muslims of the Caucasus and even all of Russia's Muslims. He has used lawlessness during his brutal rule and has made enemies in Russia, but is protected by Vladimir Putin. Is he a puppet? An independent player? Or just a necessary evil?
What part has been played by Chechnya in the Russia-Ukraine war? Would Russia have to fear Kadyrov if Putin leaves office?
