Like A Hurricane by John Frick

🎶 Another Sofa Lounge Session — stepping outside the blues for a moment 🎶
This time I’m taking a little detour from my usual territory and diving into the musical world of Neil Young, with his classic Like a Hurricane.
The first version I ever heard was by Roxy Music, which I instantly fell in love with. When I later discovered Neil Young’s original, I was smitten all over again. Both versions have their own magic.
As a guitarist, Neil Young is a bit of a wild man. It’s all about intensity, emotion, and sheer commitment rather than finesse, and that’s exactly what makes his playing so powerful. His vocal style is just as unique. I did try going down that road when I first started working on this song, but quickly realised I wasn’t going to sing it like Neil… or like Bryan Ferry, for that matter. So once again, this became very much the John Frick version.
Playing the lead guitar part was great fun, and I did try to capture a little of Neil’s raw sound and spirit. A couple of things to bear in mind: this isn’t a genre I usually play, and these Sofa Lounge Sessions are exactly that: musical experiments, warts and all. Plenty of things could be tighter or better, but the whole point is to have fun, explore new ground, and gently push my boundaries when I’m not focused on live performances.
So here’s my own reading of this timeless song.
