French President Emmanuel Macron is under increasing pressure — even from within his own political circle — to resolve France’s deepening political crisis, following a dramatic call for his resignation from former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.
Macron, who has led the country since 2017, is grappling with what many see as the most severe political challenge of his presidency. This comes after the unexpected resignation on Monday of his seventh prime minister, Sébastien Lecornu.
Macron has tasked Lecornu with negotiating a stable coalition government, giving him until Wednesday evening to reach a workable compromise. However, the chances of success remain uncertain. If no agreement is reached, one option on the table is to dissolve the National Assembly and call for snap legislative elections in hopes of reshaping the parliamentary balance.
On Tuesday evening, Macron held separate talks with the presidents of both the upper and lower houses of parliament. While the purpose of these meetings was not publicly disclosed, the French constitution requires the president to consult both officials before dissolving parliament.
Mounting Frustration Within Macron's Camp
With three prime ministers already cycled through in less than a year, dissatisfaction is rising — even among Macron’s allies. Outgoing government spokeswoman Aurore Bergé affirmed that Macron will remain in office until his term ends in 2027.
However, in a move that sent shockwaves through French politics, former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe suggested Macron should call early presidential elections after the national budget is passed. The French newspaper Le Parisien described the proposal as a “political bomb.”
The next presidential election is scheduled for 2027. Macron is constitutionally barred from running again, and Philippe has already declared his candidacy. Meanwhile, the far-right, led by Marine Le Pen, sees this as its best opportunity yet to gain power.
