Music Of 1980 In 5 Minutes

As you could tell by 1974 being the first year I chose for these comps, I like to cheer for the underdog. Although 1980 was the start of one of the most beloved decades of music, the year isn’t really representative of the decade. It was definitely a transitional year in many ways. Bands that had rule over the 70’s had been disbanded or were in transitional periods of their own. Disco, the genre that had dominated the late 70’s was now out of style. MTV started this year, yet it wouldn’t be too big of a factor until further into the decade. If you look at the Billboard Top 100 chart for 1980 it’s just bizarre. But I think because things were so weird, it gave a lot of room for smaller or newer groups to shine and experiment. A lot of artists just didn’t care at all if what they were making was going along with the times, that created some of the best music of the year or would result in some of the biggest anomalies in music. Because I like weird stuff, I love 1980.
