'Lynching an outrage, diplomatic tit-for-tat should not...': Shashi Tharoor on unrest in Bangladesh

Thiruvananthapuram | Kerala Reacting to the unrest in Bangladesh, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said India wants a stable and calm Bangladesh where minorities feel safe. He described the recent lynching of a minority individual as a “truly outrageous” act, stressing that the victim was in police custody and should never have been handed over to a mob.

Tharoor noted that while Bangladesh has summoned India’s High Commissioner and India has raised concerns over attacks near its High Commissions, such diplomatic exchanges are part of conveying attitudes and should not cause undue alarm. He also expressed concern over protests outside Indian consulates and the hostile atmosphere ahead of Bangladesh’s scheduled February elections.

Calling the rhetoric blaming India for unrest “preposterous,” Tharoor said India has no interest in destabilising Bangladesh and warned that such narratives only worsen hostility towards minorities.
