The Super NES port of Mortal Kombat was developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment (in North America and Europe) and by Acclaim Japan for the Japanese market in 1993. The original arcade game was developed by Midway and released in 1992.

Game description

Mortal Kombat for the Super NES is one of the five ports of the original arcade game that was announced during the Mortal Monday events and came out at 13 September 1993. This event’s main purpose was to promote the various ports that could be played at home.

Mortal Kombat is a one and one fighting game in the same vein as Street Fighter II. You select a character and you fight a two out of three round against every character, including a mirror match.

Then, three endurance matches are introduced. Those are fights against two characters that you fight one at a time. Your health is not restored between the two opponents has fought them is considered a single round. Mortal Kombat is well known for its fatality, which is hidden move performed at the end of the match against the loser.

Each character has one unique fatality, except Goro and Shang Tsung. There is also a Pit Fatality, the first stage fatality in the series, but it isn’t acknowledged as a finishing move unless you perform Liu Kang fatality in that stage.

The Super NES port is infamous because of its censoring. No blood is present, the Pit’s bottom is complete clean, and fatality were altered for all character but Scorpion, Sonya and Liu Kang. There is also minor censoring in some of the character ending to remove any mention of killing a. The engine is also different and slower. Many tricks that could work on the original game would not here. There is also a different the projectile behaviours.

Unlike the original Mortal Kombat, if one player throw a projectile and the second player throw one just after, player 2 will be hit by the projectile and his own projectile will vanish, not damaging player 1.

On Earthrealm, a tournament is being held on Shang Tsung’s. 500 years before the current time, Shang Tsung was banished and came back with the half-human half-dragon Goro, to take control of the tournament. For 500 years, Goro held the title of champion and was undefeated. However, everything changed when the current time tournament is held, as the seven fighters who stand above the other in that tournament changed everything.

Those seven fighters are Johnny Cage, Kano, Rayden, Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Sonya Blade. Liu Kang’s ending, which states he defeated Goro and Shang Tsung to give the tournament back to the original owner, is considered canon.

Mortal Kombat playthrough

The playthrough starts with the game introduction. They are several goals in the this run. The first is to perform double flawless and a fatality (when possible) in every match. All test your might also is successfully cleared. The second goal is to beat the game with each playable character, starting with Johnny Cage and ending with Sonya Blade. Each game is played at the highest difficulty, which is Very Hard in this version.

Many tricks were used to trick the CPU into performing an easy counter able to move. Jump kick are very effective against them, done from a distance, since the CPU (including the bosses) will never block it. The projectile behaviour of this port is also used as an advantage against the CPU.

Corner infinite was used infrequently through the run.

Reptile can be fought in this port without the shadow. It is also possible for Sonya to fight him since the blocking requirement is only mandatory during the match and not during the “Finish him/her sequence.” Defeating Reptile will not increase the difficulty because it is already set at the highest difficulty possible.

Some glitches are used, such as mid-air fatality or double throw, but no cheats were used.
