Need to learn something? This practical video covers most effective learning strategies. It is aimed at adult learners, though the foundations apply to pedagogy too.
I introduce learning strategies that all have heaps of evidence behind them for what works - how to learn effectively and retain that information long term.
I summarise some key messages that date back to the 1800s (forgetting curve), then early 20th century Vygotsky, Bandura's 1960's work on cognitive learning (self-efficacy, reflection, agency etc) and the more recent 2014 book by Roediger III, McDaniel, and Brown: Make it Stick. But don't worry, I use simple language and examples we can all relate to. I probably also should have mentioned strategies like explaining to others or teaching others is helpful for learning, and of course simulation learning is pretty fantastic.
At the end I offer four provocations for your consideration. These can be used in workshop activities for deepening learning of the material covered here.
For anyone who wants to embed learning through this video even more - see if you can identify which learning strategies I used in this video.
Please leave me a comment to let me know if this is helpful.
Cheers.
