A Year 13 Media Studies Short Documentary Project.

For 95 years, Western Springs Speedway in Auckland, New Zealand was the heart of Kiwi motorsport. Since its first race in 1929, the famous dirt oval hosted generations of sprint cars, midgets, motorcycles, and stock cars. Families filled the stands, legends were made on the clay, and the roar of engines became part of Auckland’s summer nights.

Now, after nearly a century, the speedway has run its final race. This short documentary reflects on the track’s legacy, the community it built, and what the closure of Western Springs Speedway means for New Zealand motorsport history.

📌 About the Project
The Last Lap is a short documentary I made as part of the NCEA Level 3 / Year 13 Media Studies course in 2025. It was filmed over four months, with many races attended and just as many terabytes of footage captured, leading up to its eventual closure on 22 March 2025.
