Welcome to the Next Project!
This is the 12th installment of a rather large modification project. In this episode, I'll be continuing the modification process of the Thomann/Harley Benton SC Guitar Kit.
0:05 - project intro
1:25 - wreck recovery
bridge location overview
2:13 - cavity rout’n
2:58 - f-hole n’ control layout
4:38 - more holes
5:11 - f-hole cut n’ bind
6:54 - blooper
Here is a quick walk-through of getting the project back on track after the derailment.
With the new top veneer in place, I again (more carefully) measured the bridge post placement, this time using the correct number. ha!
The new post bushing holes were drilled in square to the fingerboard and top.
The new holes were soaked in thin CA and allowed to dry before I pressed in the post bushings.
A ground lead was added to the lower post hole and the bushing pressed in. I then checked for continuity between the ground wire and the bushing, all went well.
Cavity routs for the two Filtertron style pickups were made and some additional routing toyed with which “should” allow the control wiring to be fed into the body through the bridge pickup cavity, rather than through an f-hole or a rear access cover.
Now on to the f-hole. I have sketched upwards of 100 different variants of f-hole/soundholes for this project, some were way to odd, other too calm. I kept going until I found a happy place, and a f-hole that I felt was a nod to history and a step toward the future… that may be a bit over spoke, so let’s just say I like the one I went with.
I had considered making a template and routing the f-hole shape, I was really close to doing that.
Then I suddenly felt like going old-school, so I drilled some pilot holes and used a coping saw to make the opening.
This was followed by some file work and sandpaper. It’s looking good!
Time for binding. Since the f-hole has a very fine “point” toward the front, I chose to keep the binding on the minimal side, opting for a single ply.
Using a single 0.010 thickness cream binding, and medium viscosity CA, I glued the new binding in place.
It’s really starting to look good. All this was followed by some prep work to get the body ready for clear sealer.
Now it is time to dig out all the pieces to wind some Filtertron style pickups… in the next episode.
Please be sure to Ring the Bell and Subscribe so you are notified when the Build Video drops, and leave a comment. I greatly appreciate feedback.
I probably should state the obvious, so here it goes. There is no good reason to do any of the things you will witness in this video.
I hope you enjoy the video, and stay tuned for SC Kit mod videos - Coming Soon!
NOTE: This is for entertainment, this is not a training video in any way, unless you are looking for the wrong way to do most things.
Enjoy at your own risk. Cheers!
