Sian Edwards conducts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for the Scherzo, the 3rd movement of Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony. The symphony was the first of Dvořák’s symphonies to be published and the first to be performed widely outside of Bohemia. Clearly cast in the mould of Austrian symphonies, Dvořák deftly weaves in the rich colours and textures of the Czech folk music of his childhood throughout the symphony until they eventually burst through to dominate the rousing final movement.

To launch the evening, the BSO performed Britten’s Sea Interludes from his opera Peter Grimes. Not only are the interludes a set of brilliantly realised tone portraits of the sea and its many faces, but they are a subtle psychological primer on the deep questions posed in the opera itself.

Before the interval, Sian was joined by the fantastic Ning Feng to perform Korngold's mesmerising Violin Concerto. Quoting the most haunting, expressive and beautiful themes from his extensive Hollywood catalogue, Korngold takes listeners in an emotional journey across three movements, allowing the audience to create their own movies. This masterpiece would prove Korngold's prowess as a composer who is as comfortable in the classical repertoire as he is with swashbuckling movie scores. He develops the main theme in freely rhapsodic fashion, embellishing it with pyrotechnic passagework that ascends into the stratosphere. Its combination of and unbridled virtuosity made it a favourite with audiences and soloists alike.
