Chasing Nickel Plate Road

Today we chased Nickel Plate Road S-2 Berkshire #765 across 2 states! Today it was pulling Indiana Rail Experience’s Tri-State Scenic Steam Excursion on the Indiana Northeastern Railroad tracks. We started our chase outside of the east side of Hamilton, IN on a dirt road. After that, we went to Pleasant Lake, IN where they a have a beautiful scene with a vintage Depot that the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society has recently painted. It was a good thing we got there early because by the time the train came through, there was over 30 railfans there! The next spot we caught it was at the outskirts of Angola, IN. The next spot was Fremont, IN where they a locomotive was chugging loud. I got another video of the train leaving Fremont, but there was a small building in the way. I had no time to plan this shot as I had to jump out of the car! The next spot was Ray, Indiana which is right in the Michigan-Indiana border. After that, we got some pacing video of the train! Then we caught the train leaving Reading, MI. We went up to Hillsdale, MI where the train would stop. We caught it coming around the wye in Hillsdale. We went up to the locomotive to get some pictures. And with that out chase was concluded. We couldn’t chase it on the return trip because we had to get home for Father’s Day.

Short Background on NKP 765: NKP 765 is a S-2 Berkshire with a 2-8-4 wheel arrangement built by the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio in September of 1944. It was built for the New York, Chicago, & St. Louis Railroad otherwise known as the Nickel Plate Road. The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society acquired 765 in 1973 and restored it to operation condition. It now runs often. The Federal Railroad Administration requires steam locomotives to have an entire rebuild/inspection about every 15 years. The 765 was last rebuilt, I believe in 2005. If I’m not wrong, its next rebuild should be around 2030 or 2031. If you want more info on NKP 765, go to Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society’s website.
