Replacement of Honda Mower Drive Belt HRR216 with GCV160 engine instructions in this video. Self Propel mowers have a belt that turns the transmission pulley, if the belt is worn and can no longer be adjusted by taking some slack out of the smart drive cable, then the belt needs to be changed. One other possibility is that the pulley on the engine is worn out. If the belt has been replaced, cable adjusted and the mower is slow on inclines, then examine the engine pulley for wear. If mower is slow/poor self propel and the wheels are making a grinding noise, then the likely problem is related to the gears in the wheels.
If the mower is an HRN series, you can remove the blades & blade holder, the guard on the engine pulley, disconnect the cable on the transmission, swing it past the plastic cover, remove the belt from the engine pulley, then from the transmission. Put the new belt on the transmission, slip it behind the plastic cover and then onto the engine pulley.
