November 1944, Peleliu Island. When Marines attached flamethrower fuel systems to M1 Garands, they created one of WWII's most devastating classified weapons — the Dragon Rifle.
This isn't about the standard M2 flamethrower that everyone knows. This is the story of a compact 8-pound rifle-mounted system that let every Marine project dragon fire without the 65-pound burden or massive target on their back. Japanese defenders called it "Doragon Shōjū" — the Dragon Rifle — and for good reason.
For 38 years, this weapon remained classified SECRET. No war correspondents photographed it. No Marines could speak about it. Even after the war ended, the men who used these rifles kept silent, honoring their oaths until declassification in 1983.
The M1E1 Auxiliary Flame Projector could fire 45-yard streams of burning fuel in three devastating 2-second bursts. It cleared fortified cave positions in minutes that previously took hours and dozens of casualties. Between November 1944 and August 1945, Dragon Rifles neutralized 2,800-3,400 Japanese positions, saving an estimated 1,200 Marine lives.
