Do you need to wake up every day and try to put off your old self? Put off who you were? Or has that already been done?
Ephesians 4 says, "you have heard Him and have been taught in Him...[to] lay aside the old self... and [to] put on the new self." Here, the verbs are "neutral" or timeless (called infinitives), so you read the context to discover what time they refer to. Clearly, Paul is saying that in first hearing the Gospel they "have heard" and "have been taught" (past tense) to put off the old self and to put on the new self. And that's exactly what they did through the born-again experience! This is why we see the same idea in past tense in Colossians 3: "you laid aside the old self" and "have put on the new self."
