Beneath the rust and ruin of the Madron Meat Company lies a darker foundation—one built on suffering, separation, and survival. This wasn’t just a slaughterhouse. It was once the Penzance Union Workhouse, opened in 1839 under the brutal Poor Laws. Designed by George Gilbert Scott and William Bonython Moffatt, the workhouse tore families apart and stripped inmates of identity, earning its nickname: “the bastille.”
Decades later, the site was reborn as a slaughterhouse. But the bones of the past remained—literally. The factory absorbed parts of the original workhouse, including its infirmary, creating a chilling overlap between institutional cruelty and industrial death. The final slaughter took place in 2007, but the echoes haven’t stopped.
