I've been at the point where I didn't know how to read drum notation in my early stage of drumming, I was learning everything by ear and I knew there was more to it.Drum notation is very important when you need to study from books, come up with your exercises or just when you need to write down a drum part or understand one.If you can write a thought down on a paper it gives you a chance to understand it better what you just said and opportunity to make some changes, alternate the words change phrasing etc. until you get to the right structure of the sentence that expresses you the best.Imagine if you couldn't write it down, you would have to say it so many times and at the end you might get lost or even forget the best phrasing you came up with. That's the same way how I look at the drumming, when it comes to composing, coming up with ideas and structure.
