STUCK. ALONE. NO RESCUE. | Solo Samburu Expedition

In February, Khadija and I pointed Laser north toward Samburu—not the Samburu of lodges and game drives, but the forgotten places beyond the last village.
We took a road that hasn't seen a vehicle in 5 years. The Milgis Lugga—a dry riverbed so wide you could land two Boeing 747s side by side—washed sections of it away long ago. The government considers it impassable. Locals avoid it. GPS shows it exists, but reality tells a different story.
No convoy. No backup vehicles. No mobile network. Just two people, one Land Cruiser, and a wilderness so remote that if something went wrong, no one would find us for weeks.
We got stuck in deep sand on a riverbank with no one around for tens of kilometers. We encountered Samburu warriors moving through their land like they've done for centuries. We camped alone under stars so thick they looked like they'd spill out of the sky. And we heard hyenas laughing in the darkness, reminding us whose territory this really was.
This footage almost stayed buried on a hard drive. But this was Laser's last journey before the flip—before the rebuild that created Laser 2.0. A fitting tribute to a beast that took us to the most remote corners of Kenya and never left us stranded, even when we parked it where we probably shouldn't have.
This is Wild Samburu. The version you've never seen.

📍 ROUTE DETAILS:
Departed: Nairobi, Kenya
Route: Nanyuki → Remote Samburu backcountry → Milgis Lugga → Desert Oasis → Chalbi Desert
Distance: ~500km through areas with zero mobile coverage
Duration: 5 days, 4 nights wild camping
Last vehicle on this route: 2020 (approximately 5 years ago)
---
🚙 VEHICLE:
Land Cruiser 80 Series "Laser" (triple locked with 1hdt engine, manual gearbox)
This is Laser's final expedition before the rollover incident
2 inch lift, Ironman4x4 suspension, dual rear drawers, Ultra Red Outdoors roofrack, 270° awning and shower tent, recovery gear - 4 original Maxtrax steel studded traction boards and shovel
No winch (learned that lesson the hard way)
---
⚠️ WHAT MADE THIS DIFFERENT:
Unlike our usual convoy expeditions with 20+ vehicles and 50 people, this was just Khadija and me. No safety net. No backup. The road we chose had been abandoned after Milgis Lugga floods washed away sections years ago. In some places, we were creating the track as we went. If Laser broke down out there, rescue would have taken weeks—if anyone even knew where to look.
---
⚙️ GEAR WE CARRIED:
Orginal Maxtrax steel studded recovery boards (used them multiple times)
Shovel and hi-lift jack
Extra fuel (60L in jerry cans - critical for this route)
60L water storage
Full camping setup
Emergency satellite communication (never needed it, thankfully)
Basic tools and spare parts
---
📸 FILMED WITH:
DJI Mavic 3 (drone)
GoPro Hero
Sony A7IV
DJI Osmo Action

💭 LESSONS LEARNED:
1. Remote doesn't mean dangerous if you're prepared and respectful
2. Solitude reveals things that chaos obscures
3. Some roads disappear for a reason—but sometimes they're still worth trying
4. The best journeys aren't about conquering places, but witnessing them
5. Having a capable partner matters more than a capable vehicle (though both help)
