The Vermont Republic, a short-lived independent state, emerged amidst the turbulent period of the late 18th century in what is now the U.S. state of Vermont. Frustrated by conflicting land claims and the interference of neighboring states like New York, Vermonters, led by figures like Ethan Allen and Thomas Chittenden, asserted their independence. On January 15, 1777, they declared themselves the “Free and Independent State of Vermont,” adopting their own constitution. Despite initial reluctance from the Continental Congress, Vermont operated independently for 14 years, establishing its government, levying taxes, minting currency, and even conducting diplomatic relations with foreign nations. The region’s desire for admission to the United States eventually led to a compromise, and on March 4, 1791, Vermont became the 14th state in the Union. The Vermont Republic stands as a unique and determined example of self-governance during a tumultuous era in American history, with its legacy still celebrated in the state today.
