The Endangered Clouded Apollo | To Save a Butterfly – mini-series Ep 1/3

The Clouded Apollo (Parnassius mnemosyne) is one of Sweden’s most endangered butterflies. It’s extinct in Denmark and declining globally.

In the first of three episodes of this documentary mini-series, discover how habitat loss threatens the Clouded Apollo and how targeted conservation work is helping give this species a fighting chance. This video offers a rare look into the science, dedication, and beauty behind species preservation.

We follow Martin Elmestål, Environmental Officer at the County Administrative Board of Stockholm, as he monitors populations of this endangered species.

We also meet with Uppsala University researchers Jacob Höglund and Niclas Backström – who have done genetics research for the conservation project; and with Mariana Pires Braga – Fellow at SciLifeLab and ‪@SluSe‬ researcher, who tell us all about the relationship between butterflies and their host plants.
