Asking Friends to Play | Autism Learning Lessons

In this video lesson, Xavier learns how to ask friends to play:
Step 1) Say the friend's name or gently tap their shoulder (if appropriate) to get their attention;
Step 2) Give them space and wait for their attention;
Step 3) Use the sample language given in this video to ask friends to play.

As babies become children, their needs shift from more physical and mom/dad focused toward social skills and social development with peers. This same social adjustment happens for many neurodiverse children, which means that kids with autism need to learn how to ask friends to play.

Xavier loves his friends, but he sometimes lacks the appropriate words and body language to engage them in play. The difference between Xavier and his peers in social situation only becomes more stark as he gets older. Use these steps to help learn how to appropriately ask friends to play.
