I spend more time making shop improvements and new jigs than I spend making things like drums, cutting boards and bowls. Oh sure, the joy of finishing a project can be pretty great, but there is something about cleaning up afterward, finding a great spot for the new tool I HAD TO add, or improving a jig that cannot be beat!
I decided to make this video to show off the new outer drum milling jig I built. This is at least the 3rd version of this thing that I have created, and it definitely has pieces of wood repurposed from versions going back to my first jig. Will it be the last version? Who knows? I put up with of many shortcomings of my previous milling jigs, and I have had a long time to think about how to improve the system. So here it, Fallen Oak Drums Gen-3 Outside drum milling jig.
If you build drums, you might appreciate what I have created here, and you might also have some tips for how I can make it even better.( I would love to motorize the rotation, for instance. I also have some ideas on how to more evenly advance the "sled" across the routing bit.) Please comment!
If you just like seeing mechanical things will lots of threaded pieces, knobs and adjustment slots, well, my friend, this video is for you too.
