In Somalia, Mogadishu residents voted for city leadership for the first time in over 50 years, with queues forming before sunrise.
More than half a million people registered to vote, eager for hundreds of new district commissioners.
Decades of military rule, civil war, and instability had denied generations a voice in governance.
Opposition parties boycotted, claiming fraud, while the government deployed thousands of police amid security threats.
Voters chose from over 1,600 candidates for 390 seats, facing challenges like poor services, corruption, and Al-Shabaab attacks.
Most candidates are under 50, having never experienced democratic elections, reflecting a new generation in politics.
Despite controversies, the vote marked a reclaiming of Mogadishu’s voice and a step toward democratic governance.
Al Jazeera’s Hamzah Mohamed reports.
