In 1868, Thomas D’Arcy McGee — a Father of Confederation and one of Canada’s most passionate voices — was assassinated on Sparks Street in Ottawa.
His accused killer, Patrick James Whelan, was tried and hanged at the Carleton County Gaol. Today, that same jail stands as a hostel… and some say it’s still haunted. Guests have reported footsteps in empty corridors, doors slamming at night, and the figure of a man in 19th-century clothing pacing near the old gallows.
This is the story of Canada’s only federal political assassination… and the ghost that lingers at the Ottawa Jail Hostel.
