In this video, you'll find an update to one of my tutorials from last January, where I showcased a very popular chord progression on social media with some personal twists to make it more interesting. This time, I've added sheet music for a more convenient visualization.
This progression is rooted in the circle of fifths but incorporates some diminished chords in inversion.
The progression I'll be playing starts from the fourth degree and unfolds as follows: Fmaj7 | B°7/F | Em7 | A°7/Eb | Dm7 | G7 | Cmaj7 | E°7/Db.
Typically, you might expect an Am7 (or an A7 acting as a temporary dominant leading into Dm) as the fourth chord. However, I chose to experiment with a diminished seventh chord in second inversion, featuring Eb in the bass. This creates a smooth chromatic descent down to D, which I find captivating.
Other variations might use an Fm6, or even an Fm7 instead of the B°7/F that I've indicated. The interesting thing is that B°7/F consists of the same notes as F°7 (F fully diminished). I prefer the B°7/F notation because it aligns with the logic of the circle of fifths - after F, we should ideally find a B.
An intriguing aspect, in my opinion, is also the use of E°7/Db (enharmonically equivalent to C#°7) as the final chord. This diminished seventh chord acts as the vii° of the key we're returning to (F major), creating a sense of tension that resolves naturally into the progression. It functions similarly to a traditional V-I cadence, where the tension builds up and then resolves, providing a satisfying conclusion to the progression.
I hope you enjoy experimenting with this progression!
