San Juan La Laguna - San Juan La Laguna is a small, picturesque town located on the southern shore of Lake Atitlán in the Sololá department of Guatemala. Nestled between the dramatic San Pedro volcano and the shimmering lake, it is one of the most colorful and culturally rich villages around Atitlán.

The town is primarily inhabited by the Tz’utujil Maya, and visitors are immediately welcomed by vibrant murals, traditional weaving workshops, and an authentic sense of community. San Juan La Laguna is well known for its cooperatives of local women artisans, who produce handwoven textiles using natural dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects. Many workshops are open to the public, allowing travelers to see the dyeing and weaving process firsthand.


Santiago Atitlán - Santiago Atitlán is the largest and one of the most culturally rich towns on the shores of Lake Atitlán, located in the Sololá department of Guatemala. Nestled between the towering San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán volcanoes, it offers stunning scenery combined with deep-rooted Mayan traditions.

The town is home to the Tz’utujil Maya, and its streets are filled with vibrant markets, traditional dress, and daily life that reflects centuries-old customs. One of Santiago’s most unique cultural highlights is the veneration of Maximón, a folk saint that blends Catholic, Mayan, and local spiritual beliefs. Visitors can see him in a small shrine, where offerings of candles, liquor, and cigars are made.
